When I published the first content on this site on 27th July about the passive money-making blog, there was no content to do internal linking.

Techazu is now two months old, but the page viewers are 2 times more than the first month. The reason is the optimization of both internal and external linking, along with other SEO tactics.

You may ask why so many optimizations are needed to rank your site. My beloved bloggers, I'm reminding you that ranking a site is not so easy nowadays.

After 2020 core updates in the Google algorithm, many new indexing and ranking factors are added. So each blogger should be aware of these significant changes.

Mobile-friendliness, speed optimization, and link structure are the prime focus for Search Engine Optimization.

On-page elements become more important than Off-page SEO factors due to the latest core updates.

 Internal Links

Internal links are the hyperlinks that point to the other pages of the same site. It helps readers know that you have other relevant content on the site. Through internal linking, You can make your site more user-friendly.

Page viewers can easily find out your content without going for further search. If the linking page is helpful to them, they will be engaged more on your site. You are adding value to your content through internal linking that benefits both the users and search engines.

Internal links are used for pointing to the navigation pages or static pages like the ''About US'' or ''Contact US'' Page. The usual practice of internal linking that points to a landing page is ''Call to action''(CTA).

Internal link to the relevant page helps Google bot to find your page and understand the context of the specific page from the anchor text. New content with relevant internal linking helps Google better crawling and indexing.

According to Moz, internal links are the most important to establish site architecture and to spread the link equity.

Anchor text is usually visible in blue color and underlined unless customized. URL of the destination page is hidden inside the anchor text. When users click on it, they arrive at the target page.

Internal Links Best Practices.

  • Use a Reasonable Number of internal links

How many numbers of internal links are good for SEO?

It depends upon the length of content in which the links exist. Although there is no hard and fast rule, the number of links should be reasonable. In lengthy content, you have the opportunity to add more internal links than short-length content.

According to Ahref, the more internal links your webpage has, the higher is the chance to rank. But it is all about the quality of links that play important roles in the ranking.

  • Page Relevancy

The use of random internal linking may hurt your site. Google considers it as spammy links. Contextual linking to internal pages is important. If your content is about how to start a blog, a link to a page on how to publish optimized content (blog post) from the perspective of SEO is quite relevant.

  • Descriptive Anchor Text

The use of descriptive anchor text helps users understand what the content is about. It also helps Google and other search engines to comprehend the relationship between the linking internal pages.

For internal linking, You Should Avoid the following:
  • Linking to Low-Quality Page.
  • Keyword stuffing in the anchor text.
  • Use of Rel=nofollow attribute.
  • Choosing the option to Open in a new window as it is uncomfortable for mobile users.

External Link Best Practices

External Link refers to the hyperlink pointing to another domain. There are two types of external links-inbound and outbound. The link pointing from my website to another website is an outbound link. When other people link to my site, it is an inbound link.

Inbound links are often called backlinks. Backlinks are of two types- Do-follow backlinks and No-follow backlinks. Many bloggers are crazy to get a do-follow inbound link from as it has a great ranking value.

Inbound link passes link juice from the source website to your website which increases the value of your site. It also drives traffic to your website. To put it simply, a Good quality incoming link enhances the value of your site.

You may think, why should you link to another website. Well, what is an outbound link to your site is inbound to another site. Linking to other relevant websites helps the users to get more information they seek.

Outbound links increase the value of the content as well as your website by providing additional evidence on the relevant topic. It's a signal to your readers that your site is authoritative and reliable. It also improves SEO as search engines.

Linking to high authority popular sites is a healthy signal for your site. It helps improve SEO that leads your site to rank higher.

Many bloggers are reluctant to outbound links for fear of losing traffic and passing link juice on the linking website.

If you're one of them, I'm telling you how to play the game. If you don't want to pass link juice (ranking value), you can use the rel = nofollow attribute (tag). Not always, but in certain situations, such as linking to sites loaded with affiliate products or advertising links.

What about traffic?

If your content is useful, don't be afraid to lose traffic, they will come back with more referral traffic.

Should I do outbound links to competitors' websites?

Focusing on the interest of the users instead of self-interest is the key to success as a blogger. The opinions of many SEO experts are similar that you can find in the link building guide of Alexa.

Anchor text in the External links

For the anchor text, the rules for both internal and external linking are the same. But in certain cases of external links, the use of ''nofollow'' attributes is a wise decision. For example, linking to suspicious sites.

While using an external link, you should consider the following factors:

  • The popularity of the destination domain. Check the average monthly page views, Reader comments, and replies of the author.
  • Domain Authority( DA) and Page Authority(PA). Use an appropriate tool to check the authorities.
  • Relevancy of the pages between the source and destination site.
  • Quality of Information, length of the content, and author's profile.

Benefits of External Link

External links play important role in website ranking. A search engine considers external links are third-party votes. There is sufficient evidence that both inbound and outbound links improve SEO. The importance of the two types of external links may vary but both matter.
  • The trustworthy-Outbound link help increase the trustworthiness of your site to users as well as search engines. Disclosing the source of information via outbound links helps build trust in your audience.
  • Popularity- Google considers external links as important metrics while determining the popularity authority of your webpage.
  • Backlinks- Enhances the potential to acquire backlinks. Encourage content marketers, bloggers, journalists to link to your content.
  • Relationship Building- It helps build a relationship with the authors or site owners.
  • Visibility on the Search Pages-Outbound links provides a good signal to search engines to rank your page on search queries that enhance the visibility of your pages on SERPs.
It is important to mention that you should analyze the link structure of your site periodically with any link checker tool that can detect broken links of your site.

A broken Link can hurt the performance of your site, so fix it immediately. Either you replace it with relevant pages or delete it.

Google Webmaster Guidelines on Link Schemes

''The best way to get other sites to create high-quality, relevant links to yours is to create unique, relevant content that can naturally gain popularity in the Internet community. Creating good content pays off: Links are usually editorial votes given by choice, and the more useful content you have, the greater the chances someone else will find that content valuable to their readers and link to it''.

''Links are regarded as a signal of website popularity, the best way to get other sites to link to you is to create high quality and unique content. Bing’s crawler (Bingbot) follows links within your website (internal links) or from other sites (external links) to help Bing discover new content and new pages on your site''.

Final Thoughts

Your content should have useful information and easy navigation for the readers. Create engaging content that provides relevant information they ask, link to the popular website with adequate information on the relevant topic.
